I drew this during lunch the day before my birthday. I finished it off over a fish taco dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant and a coffee dessert at the bookstore afterwards. Watercolor, gouache and ballpoint…
I had a pet arowana when I was younger that I had to free because got too big for my tank. He or she was about 2 feet long. I still go by the lake where I released him/her. On my lucky days, I'll catch a glimpse of him/her swimming by under the shadows. I hid it in this page. Watercolor, gouache and ballpoint…

Love these images!! Nice work. :-)
i really like the sketchbooks but am blown away by what you have done with photoshop....i had no idea the program was capable of such things...and he oil paining of your cousin...just beautiful
Hi Dex, thanks for visiting my illustration blog. It seems to me that if you are interested in doing children's books, you have the makings of a beautiful story in the fish tale (no pun intended) you alluded to in your post. Try writing that from a number of different perspectives -- the child, the fish, the lake, etc. I think it would be really wonderful. I like the metaphors it brings up -- the child out grows his attachment, but he revisits it in the lake that holds his memories... It would be beautiful, especially with your illustrations!!! Good luck, and feel free to bounce ideas if you need a sounding board!
WOW these are incredible!!!
Thanks for your kind comment about my opposites illo. If I ever get off my ass and make prints, I'll let you know.
what a great blog, i love your work!
these sketches are quite beautiful!!! i can't get over how delicately the lines flow in to one another as if it is a choreographed dance of shapes and spaces ... really impressive sketches!
Awesome work! I love it all. You should totally publish a book with your sketches - Many of us would buy it. You have a lot of talent!
Very pretty design! Keep up the good work. Thanks.

Dex, your sketchbook work is really amazing and among my favorite pieces here. It's the perfect blend of a wandering mind and still maintaining things like composition and color and design. Really great stuff. It's what a sketchbook should look like in my mind and I'm jealous I'm incapable of keeping one :) Inspiring!
Photoshop can be daunting but when you achieve the look you want with it, it's very satisfying. Use it for what's intuitive and for it's strengths (like any software). You already have what seems like a master understanding. Even if you don't, I won't tell ;)

i like a lot this two.
If I had been bright enough to do a web search I might have introduced myself tonight at the showing - I really enjoy your work, and I love the sketch book pages.
